May was born on November 13th, 1900. May's father is Augustus Abner Hill and her mother was Martha Jane Keahey. Her maternal grandparents were George Pleasant Keahey and Susan Berry. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Merritt, Pleasant A., Verdia Little, Eval Garland, William Edward, Mary, June E. and Effie M..
