His paternal grandparents were Arnoul de Gand and Lietgarde de Cleves; his maternal grandparents were Baldwin IV Fair Beard Barbatus of Flanders and Ogive (Otgiva) of Luxemburg. He had a brother and a sister, named Rudolph the Advocate de Gand of and Adele van Holland of. He was the youngest of the three children. He died before 1032.
