Rudolph the Advocate de Gand of was born in 1022 in Blandin, Ghent (Gand, Gent), Flanders, Belgium.  Rudolph the Advocate de Gand of's father was Adalbert (Lambert) de Gand and his mother was Ermengarde of Flanders.  His paternal grandparents were Arnoul de Gand and Lietgarde de Cleves; his maternal grandparents were Baldwin IV Fair Beard Barbatus of Flanders and Ogive (Otgiva) of Luxemburg. He had a brother and a sister, named Folcard and Adele van Holland of.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
