Mary E. was born in June 1855 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Mary E.'s father was John Vineyard and her mother was Sarah Jane Shaver. Her paternal grandfather was Pressley Vineyard; her maternal grandparents were John David Shaver and Mary Parsons. She has six brothers and three sisters, named John W. Bennett, Andrew Jackson, Henry M., John R., James P., Lewis, Sophena, Martha and Sarah E.. She is the third oldest of the ten children.-
