Joan was born in Castle Harlsey, Yorkshire, England.  Joan's father was Thomas Strangeways and her mother was Catherine de Neville.  Her paternal grandfather was Henry Strangeways; her maternal grandparents were Ralph de Neville and Joan de Beaufort. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Dufort Travers, Catherine and Isabel. She had a half-brother named John VI.  She was buried in Saint Augustine Friars, London, Middlesex, England.


Joan's first family with William Willoughby
