George W. was born on January 2nd, 1827 in Randolph County, West Virginia. George W.'s father was Francis Riffle Shaver and his mother was Phoebe Ellen Hall. His paternal grandparents were Peter M. Shaver and Susan Riffle. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John S., James H., Jacob C., Hezekiah, Frances Riffle, Edward C., Susanna, Sarah, Mary Jane and Eleanor.
