Mahalia was born in 1843 in Ross or Pike County, Ohio. Mahalia's father was James M. McDowell and her mother was Eliza Daniels. Her paternal grandparents were John McDowell and Catherine Hayes; her maternal grandmother was Vera la Vellier. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Levi, Allen Benton, John Daniels, Sarah Ann, Lucinda, Susan Ann, Lydia Ellen and Mary Jane. She died at the age of 75 in 1918 in Illinois.General Notes
