His paternal grandfather was Samuel Kendall Gifford and his paternal grandmother is Lora Ann Demille. He had five brothers and eight sisters, named Oliver Demille, William Henry, John Jones, Emerett, Thatcher, Sarah Jane, Mary Emily, Lora Ann, Rosette, Adelia, Sylvia, Margery and Florence. He is the second youngest of the fourteen children. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Jesse, Alpheus, Esther, Minerva, Ethel and Cornelia.-
