Thomas Bates was born on January 14th, 1792 in Hanover County, Virginia. Thomas Bates' father was John Anderson and his mother was Mary Trevilian. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Anderson and Frances Jones Harrod; his maternal grandmother was Sophia Terry. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Edmund Monroe, Prof. Harrod John, John Montgomery, Horace Franklin, Sophia Trevilian, Eliza, Mary Trevilian, Frances Virginia and Lucy Ann.
