Perry was born in 1828 in North Carolina. Perry's father was James McQueary and his mother was Rachel Jennings. His paternal grandparents were John McQueary and Nancy Shepherd. He had three sisters named Betsy V., Polly and Sally. He had six half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Cally, John Harvey, William Elsbury, George Washington, Haywood Martin, Marmaduke, Kiziah, Lurany Caroline, Nancy Jane and Phoebe.-
