His paternal grandparents were John HARDMAN and Margaret WALL; his maternal grandparents were William KELSHAW and Ellen WAREING. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named William, Edward, John, James, Betty, Molley, Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, Ann, Alice and Margaret. He was the oldest of the fourteen children.
