DEATH  OF  JOHN  F. YOUNG
Well-Known Citizen
Passed Away Last Evening

Last evening at eight o'clock at his home on west Hendricks street, John F. Young, a well-known resident of this city, died after an illness of several months, the last few weeks being characterized by acute suffering.  For over twenty years he was engaged in the livery business here, but was compelled to retire on account of failing health.  His death was due to tuberculosis.  At the hour of his death the members of his family were present at the bedside. Mr. Young was a member of the First M. E. church of this city for many years.  He was sixty-five years and two days of age.  He leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Creiger, and two sons, George and  Johnny.  Also one brother, James Young, of Winterset, Iowa.  The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at three O'clock, the Rev. G.M. Smith officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Hill cemetery.  Shelby Lodge No. 39, I.O.O.F., will have charge of the funeral.  Edwards & Hageman will act as as directors.


It appears that all of John M's children had moved away except for John F who was ran the farm after John M's death till 1883. John Fleming Young married Susan Hall in 1880.  Susan's brother Elmer Hall was living with them on the farm according to census data in 1880.  John F moved to a house on Hendricks St. in town about the time his daughter Pearl was born. He operated a livery stable in town. Susan died from complications of childbirth with their second child, David who also died at age 1 month. The 1890 census after Susan's death doesn't reveal what happens to Elmer.  John F was married in 1889 to his second wife Lena Stephan, whose uncle owned and operated the Stephan shoe store. Lena had been living with the Elliot Family for 18 years as a housekeeper. They had 2 children, George Elliot and John Stephan.  Lena's former employer must have influenced George's middle name.

John F. was elected a member of the Shelbyville City Council in 1894 from the 4th ward on the Republican ticket. He joined the Odd fellows in 1888. In 1885 John F started a sprinkling system for merchants and residents that during the summer and to reduce the constant dust. Owning a livery stable made this a natural extension of his existing business. A large yellow barrel drawn by two horses from his livery  sprinkled water each day for a fee. In 1906 after John F's death the Street Sprinkling Association was incorporated with several prominent citizens listed as owners. The association started using oil to defeat the dust but made the streets much slicker.

John F died from Tuberculosis after a few months of illness. He was the Worshipful Master of the I.O.O.F, Shelby Lodge 39.
