Mary was born in 1842 in ,Rutherford,NC.1 Mary's father was Elijah Murray Swesey and her mother was Minerva Lee Calton. Her paternal grandparents were John Swesey and Rosannah Borden. She had a brother and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Lawson, Susanah, Louisa, Sarah, Josephine and Infant. She was the second oldest of the seven children.-
