James was born about 1800. James' father was James Gwin and his mother was Rachel Stephenson. His paternal grandparents were David Gwin and Jane Carlisle. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Matthew, David, Samuel, John, Eliza, Rachel, Ann, Lucinda and Jane. He was the second oldest of the ten children.-
