John's father was Nathan Goodrich and his mother was Susannah Lucy Whetzel. His paternal grandparents were Abner Goodrich and Ruth Delano; his maternal grandparents were Johannes Martin Whetzel and Maria Barbara Bonnet. He had three brothers and a sister, named George Whetzel, William, James and Cynthia.-
