Hespa O. was born on December 28th, 1912 in Monroe County, Indiana. Hespa O.'s father was George Washington Shields and her mother was Luella Richardson. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Lindsey Shields and Eliza Jane Whitsell. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Ambrose W., Fred Colon, Frank G. Shields, Alva, Goldie Cecil, Ferbia Mae, Ruby and Maude. She was the youngest of the nine children.-
