His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had four brothers and five sisters, named James Alexander, Francis M., William Edward, David W., Sarah Jane, Urana L. "Winnie", Martha A., Rowena and Orpha. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 63 on June 2nd, 1930 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana.-
