General Notes

Nicholas acquired the estate of Ardcroman by his marriage with Alson,
daughter and heir of Alexander Roche of Ardcroman.
He was succeeded by his son Robert Masterson who died seized of the
estate 18 Oct 1621 and was succeeded by his son and heir, Edward
Masterson, then aged 3 years. Edward Masterson was in possession in 1641
as appears by the Book of Survey and Distribution, and further by an
inquisition taken at Wexford 7 May 1664 (Charles II) that "On the 12th
March 1642 at Tomakleery in said County, within two miles of his house
was taken prisoner by the forces of the late King and carried to Dublin."
His estate was forfeited and granted to the Earl of Anglesey under the
Acts of Settlement and Explanation. In 1689 he was appointed a Deputy
Lieutenant of the County Wexford, and the following year filed a Bill in
Chancery 28 May 1690 in which he was described as Edward Masterson of
Ferns Esq. In order to receive possession of the Ardcroman estate as the
Act of Settlement had been repealed by the Parliment held by James II in
Dublin.
In the same year Thomas Keirzen Esq had filed a Bill in Chancery proging
for an injunction against Edward Masterson and the Thomas Masterson who
he alleged "Pretending some ancient title" had disturbed him in
possession of Castletown, Ferns, and other Lands part of the Ferns estate
in the Barony of Scarawalsh and County of Wexford. But the events of the
Revolution prevented these from being proceeded with. Thus Edward
Masterson failed to get possession of the estate and no further trace of
his family has been found.
