Ernest was born on August 16th, 1918 in Monroe County, Indiana. Ernest's father was Cecil Robert Hawkins and his mother was Grace Lena Shields. His maternal grandparents were David Shields and Lucy Amanda Vint. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Ermil, Billie, Living, Eulas, Gayle, Kathryn, Bartha and Living.-
