Lora Jane was born in 1853 in Gilmer Co,WV. Lora Jane's father was Steven David (Stephenson B (?)) Hicks and her mother was Christina Barnhouse. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Stephen Hicks and Margaret Boggs; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Barnhouse and Mary McCune. She had a brother and two sisters, named David, Mary Ellen and Sarah J.. She was the second oldest of the four children. She died about 1881.-
