George Nelson was born on May 11th, 1867 in Center Point, Linn County, Iowa.1 George Nelson's father was John Nelson Varner and his mother was Mary "Libby" Elizabeth Cress. His paternal grandparents were John "Johnny" Varner Jr and Irena Emma Andrews; his maternal grandparents were William Cress and Jane P Cumming. He had four brothers named John Alvin, Sylvester Elsworth, Clarence Coltson and William Arthur. He was the second oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Leroy Edward, Jay Dee and Ida Mae.-
