Ethelgiva of Shaftsbury was born in 0875 in Wessex, England.1 Ethelgiva of Shaftsbury's father was The Great Alfred and her mother was Ethelwitha of Mercia. Her paternal grandparents were Ethelwild (Aethelwulf) and Osburh of Wessex; her maternal grandparents were Mucel Aethelred and Eadburh Of Mercia. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward I the Elder, Edmund of Wessex, Ethelwerd of Wessex, Elfrida of Wessex and Ethelfleda. She was the second youngest of the six children.
