Elfrida of Wessex was born in 0868 in Wessex, England.1 Elfrida of Wessex's father was The Great Alfred and her mother was Ethelwitha of Mercia. Her paternal grandparents were Ethelwild (Aethelwulf) and Osburh of Wessex; her maternal grandparents were Mucel Aethelred and Eadburh Of Mercia. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward I the Elder, Edmund of Wessex, Ethelwerd of Wessex, Ethelfleda and Ethelgiva of Shaftsbury. She was the oldest of the six children.1 General Notes

In Giles' trans of Willia m of Malmesbury's *Chronicles*, she is given as ETHELSWITHA: "He [Alfred] gave his daughte r Ethelswitha in marriage to Baldwin earl of Flanders, by whom he had Arnulf and Ethelwulf."
