Mary was born about 1770 in ,Martin Co, North Carolina.1 Mary's father was Thomas BEST and her mother was Mary Ann Jones. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas BEST and Sarah Jane Alexander; her maternal grandfather was Lewelling GRIMES. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Henry, William, Sarah and Amy. She was the youngest of the six children.
