Mary Ann was born in 1817 in Dauphin Co., PA. Mary Ann's father was John, Jr. Slaymaker and her mother was Jeannett McIlvaine. Her paternal grandparents were John Slaymaker and Elizabeth White. She had six brothers and five sisters, named George McIlvaine, John Linn, James Hamilton, Robert McIlvaine, William Alexander, Samuel Humes, Elizabeth Ann, Mary, Sarah Jane, Margaret Catherine and Lavinia.
