Lavinia was born in 1826 in Lancaster Co., PA. Lavinia's father was John, Jr. Slaymaker and her mother was Jeannett McIlvaine. Her paternal grandparents were John Slaymaker and Elizabeth White. She had six brothers and five sisters, named George McIlvaine, John Linn, James Hamilton, Robert McIlvaine, William Alexander, Samuel Humes, Elizabeth Ann, Mary, Sarah Jane, Mary Ann and Margaret Catherine.
