Alfred was born in 1816 and his baptism took place on November 10th, 1816 in Rudgwick, Sussex.1   Alfred's father was Richard Steere and his mother was Mary steer. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, James, William, Richard, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Amelia, Mary, Caroline and Eunice.  He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children.
