James was born in 1800 and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1800 in Rudgwick, Sussex.1   James' father was Richard Steere and his mother was Mary steer. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, William, Alfred, Richard, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Amelia, Mary, Caroline and Eunice.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
