William's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Jane Hunt.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith; his maternal grandparents were James Hunt and Lucy. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, James, Thomas, Percy, Anne and Emma.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1862.  He was buried on January 24th, 1862.¹
