Emma was born in 1858 in Petworth and her baptism took place there on September 5th, 1858.1 2  Emma's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Jane Hunt.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith; her maternal grandparents were James Hunt and Lucy. She had five brothers and a sister, named George, James, William, Thomas, Percy and Anne.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
