Thomas was born in 1862 in Petworth and his baptism took place there on November 15th, 1862.1 2  Thomas' father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Jane Hunt.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith; his maternal grandparents were James Hunt and Lucy. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, James, William, Percy, Anne and Emma.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
