Thomas' father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Charlotte Miller.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Anne Merriott; his maternal grandparents were Henry Miller and Rhoda. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Charles, William, Alfred, George, Mary and Jane.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at just 1 days old on July 19th, 1843.  He was buried on July 23rd, 1843 in Petworth.²
