Mary's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Charlotte Miller.  Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Anne Merriott; her maternal grandparents were Henry Miller and Rhoda. She had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Charles, William, Alfred, George and Jane.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
