Jane was born in 1854 in Petworth and her baptism took place there on August 16th, 1854.1 2  Jane's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Charlotte Miller.  Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Anne Merriott; her maternal grandparents were Henry Miller and Rhoda. She had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Charles, William, Alfred, George and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
