George was born in 1858 in Petersfield, Hants.1  George's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Charlotte Miller.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Anne Merriott; his maternal grandparents were Henry Miller and Rhoda. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Charles, William, Alfred, Mary and Jane.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
