Lily's father was William Steer and her mother was Caroline Willcox. Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Janet Hamlin. She had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Jasper, John, Rosetta, Ada, Violet, Caroline, Daisy and Clara. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
