George was born in 1871 in Bramley.1  George's father was Stephen Steer and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandparents were John Steer and Eliza steer. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Frederick, Albert, Alice, Kate and Annie.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
