George was born in 1835 in Petworth and his baptism took place there on May 17th, 1835.1 2  George's father was George Steer and his mother was Charlotte Lucas.  His maternal grandparents were Lucas and Sarah. He had a brother and five sisters, named James, Sarah, Emily, Charlotte, Fanny, Catherine and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
