Ellen was born in 1852 in Petworth and his/her baptism took place there on January 25th, 1852.1 2  Ellen's father was George Steer and his/her mother was Charlotte Lucas.  His/her maternal grandparents were Lucas and Sarah. He/she had two brothers and five sisters, named George, James, Sarah, Emily, Charlotte, Fanny and Catherine.  He/she was the second youngest of the eight children.
