Eliza was born in 1844 in Egdean Sussex and her baptism took place on June 2nd, 1844 in Cottage.1 2  Eliza's father was Richard Steer and her mother was Mary Mitchell.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Steer and Sarah steer. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Arthur, Frederick, Fanny and Emmeline.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
