Richard's father was Richard Steer and his mother was Sarah steer.  His paternal grandparents were John Steer and Mary Hersee. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, John, William, Henry, Jane, Mary, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
