William was born about 1850 in Cheddleton, Staffordshire.1   William's father was Steers and his mother was Martha STEERS. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, George H, Martha, Hannah, Ruth and Morton J.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
