James was born about 1835 in Leek Frith, Staffordshire.1   James' father was Steers and his mother was Martha STEERS. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, George H, Martha, Hannah, Ruth and Morton J.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
