William was born about 1855 in Woodhouse Mill Yorks.1   William's father was Alfred STEER and his mother was Christiana STEER. He had five brothers and a sister, named Johnston, Alfred, Thomas, George, Henry and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
