George was born about 1858 in Woodhouse Mill Yorks.1   George's father was Alfred STEER and his mother was Christiana STEER. He had five brothers and a sister, named Johnston, Alfred, Thomas, William, Henry and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
