Thomas was born about 1850 in Woodhouse Mill Yorks.1   Thomas' father was Alfred STEER and his mother was Christiana STEER. He had five brothers and a sister, named Johnston, Alfred, William, George, Henry and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
