Johnston was born about 1844 in Adwick upon Dearne.1   Johnston's father was Alfred STEER and his mother was Christiana STEER. He had five brothers and a sister, named Alfred, Thomas, William, George, Henry and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
