William was born in 1773 in Limpsfield Surrey.1   William's father was George STEER and his mother was Martha YOUNG.  His paternal grandparents were William STEER and Elizabeth HASWEL. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, John, Edward, Martha, Ann, Mary and Susannah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
