Thomas was born about 1891 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire.1   Thomas' father was Richard STEER and his mother was Jane B STEER. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Archibald, Phillip, Harry, Daniel, Mary, Edith and Jenny.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
