Samuel was born about 1871 in Thorpe, Yorkshire.1   Samuel's father was Thomas STEER and his mother was Emma Sanderson.  His maternal grandfather was Ambrose SANDERSON and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Albert E, Thomas, Joseph H, Harriett and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
